Late May / beginning of June the Mauritius Squash Rackets Association (MSRA) hosted an impressive show at Grand Baie la Croisette (GBLC) in Mauritius, sponsored by Necker, the MCB, Attitude Hotels and more. Professional players from South Africa, Germany, France, India, Switzerland and more attended, against whom the qualifying Mauritians had the chance to play as well. The glass court and large square of GBLC offered an real spectacle for enthusiasts of the sport, shoppers and restaurant goers alike, or even residents who could watch from their balconies. From a photographer’s perspective it was an exciting/challenging assignment: fast moving subjects, low light, reflections on glass and of course no flash as it would blind the players. I used the trusty Nikon D610 with a lens ordered specially for the occasion, the new Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2. With the light available there I was able to shoot with ISO between 2500 and 3200 at 1/250 or 1/320 shutter speed, all at f/2.8. 3D continuous autofocus worked best, although full autofocus did offer some good shots as well. The following are from the ladies final:
Many great games followed with an amusing display of camaraderie and some funny moments. I learned later that since this tournament wouldn’t affect the player’s international rankings, they were more relaxed and playing riskier moves than they would otherwise.
In the final however, the game was visibly more tense and a little more conservative but great to watch nonetheless.
Big thanks to RSVP events for this exciting opportunity and looking forward to the next edition!
